This is now the most sparsely populated area of Great Britain. Following the highland clearances of the early 19th century, when crofers were driven from the land to make way for sheep, the people never returned.
There are still pasture lands and sheep, but only 12,000 people live in over 1 million acres. This is of of the few great wildernesses remaining in Europe today.
